Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) reacts with calcium, magnesium, iron and copper such that precipitation does not occur. It also reacts to a lesser extent with boiler metal surfaces and may remove some magnetite, hence overfeeding of chelants should be avoided.
Rats fed low mineral diets with or without added calcium disodium EDTA for four months had reduced weight gain, but their general condition was comparable to that of controls (Yang, 1964). Rats fed 1%, 5%, or 10% disodium salt of EDTA for 90 days had significantly lower food consumption and weight gain than controls (Wynn, et al.1970).
Because EDTA 4– also binds essential calcium ions, it is often administered as the calcium disodium salt. For example, when Na 2 Ca(EDTA) is given to a patient, the [Ca(EDTA)] 2– ions react with circulating Pb 2+ ions and the metal ions are exchanged:
